The Green Bay Packers Thursday added to an exclusive fraternity, naming Mike McCarthy the team's 14th Head Coach. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, made the historic announcement.
McCarthy, 42, becomes the league's youngest head coach, nearly three months younger than Tampa Bay's Jon Gruden and seven months younger than Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio. And, McCarthy inherits one of the league's youngest teams. Green Bay's roster at season's end averaged years of age.
Thompson was impressed with McCarthy's leadership ability, toughness, football knowledge and awareness of the unique Green Bay organization, its players and the team's role in its surrounding community.

Michael John McCarthy (born November 10, ) is an American professional football coach who most recently was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL) from to From to , he was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. In , McCarthy led the team to a win in Super Bowl XLV over his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

Early life

His father, Joe McCarthy Jr., was a firefighter for the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau and an officer for the Pittsburgh Police. He also owned a bar called Joe McCarthy's Bar and Grill, which Mike spent his Sundays cleaning before church. McCarthy was raised as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

GREEN BAY – Seventy-three times Mike McCarthy led the Packers out from the Lambeau Field home tunnel to regular-season victory, more than any other head coach in the stadium's history.
This Sunday, however, McCarthy will return from the narrow visiting tunnel inside Lambeau's iconic bowl as the third-year head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
From an X's and O's perspective, McCarthy looks at this Week 10 matchup with Green Bay and sees a "dangerous" opponent standing in the way of the Cowboys' seventh win of the year.
But as someone who spent a great deal of time learning the history of the Packers organization, McCarthy acknowledges how meaningful it will be to step back on the field he shepherded from
