Abstract

The La Plata basin is the second largest basin of South America and has supported important river fisheries for more than a century. In this paper, we evaluate for the first time the historical trends of landings of 21 fish taxa and the recent population trends of 27 species of commercial fishes in the lower La Plata basin (Argentina). We compiled three kinds of data sets: Total fishery landings (between and ) and exports (‒), fisheries monitoring programs of Chaco and Santa Fe provinces in the Paraná River (‒), and surveys of fish populations in the Upper (Corrientes, ‒) and Middle (EBIPES, ‒) Paraná River. The analysis of the historical landings showed more species declining in the lower portion of the basin than in the upper basin. Regarding recent population trends, Pimelodus spp., Hoplias spp., Salminus brasiliensis, Luciopimelodus pati, and Ageneiosus spp. declined in more than one region, while Megaleporinus spp., Pterodoras granulosus, and Oxydoras kneri showed stable to positive trends, with the other species varying in their trends between regions. These tendencies could be associated to a combination of factors such as overfishing and environmental changes that would require an ecosystem approach for their adequate management.

La Cuenca del Plata es la segunda más grande de Sudamérica y ha soportado importantes pesquerías fluviales Background: Long intergenic non-coding RNA, is one type of lncRNA, exerting various cellular activities, as does ncRNA, including the regulation of gene expression and chromatin remodeling. The abnormal expression of lincRNAs can induce or suppress carcinogenesis. Main body: LincRNAs can regulate cancer progression through different mechanisms and are considered as potential drug targets. Genetic variations such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in lincRNAs may affect gene expression and messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) stability. SNPs in lincRNAs have been found to be associated with different types of cancer, as well. Specifically, LINC has been known to promote the progression of multiple malignancies such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and others, making it a promising cancer prognostic molecular marker. Conclusion: LincRNAs have been proved to be associated with different cancer types through various pathways. Herein, we performed a comprehensive literature and in silico databases search listing lncRNAs, lincRNAs including LINC, lncRNAs’ SNPs, as well as LINC SNPs in different cancer types, focusing on their role in various cancer types and mechanism(s) of action. Keywords: lncRNA, lincRNA, LINC, SNPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms, cancer, prognostic molecular marker, in silico, ncRNA precision The study of epigenetics, namely, non-protein coding RNAs (ncRNAs), has had significant increased attention recently [1]. ncRNAs are involved in a variety of physiological activities, including the regulation of gene expression and RNA splicing [2]. Long ncRNAs (lncRNA) have a length of more than nucleotides and do not code for proteins [3]; at every stage of gene expression, they act as either an indicator-, decoy-, or scaffold-, and guide-lncRNA [4]. A variety of human disorders have been linked to abnormal lncRNA expression [5]. For example, Nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogen Altered expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs) has previously been investigated in breast cancer. However, little is known about the effects of drugs on their regulation and relationship with the cognate linear transcript (linRNA). We analyzed the dysregulation of both 12 cancer-related circRNAs and their linRNAs in two breast cancer cell lines undergoing various treatments. We selected 14 well-known anticancer agents affecting different cellular pathways and examined their impact. Upon drug exposure circRNA/linRNA expression ratios increased, as a result of the downregulation of linRNA and upregulation of circRNA within the same gene. In this study, we highlighted the relevance of identifying the drug-regulated circ/linRNAs according to their oncogenic or anticancer role. Interestingly, VRK1 and MAN1A2 were increased by several drugs in both cell lines. However, they display opposite effects, circ/linVRK1 favors apoptosis whereas circ/linMAN1A2 stimulates cell migration, and only XL did not alter the ratio of other dangerous circ/linRNAs in MCF In MDA-MB cells, AMG and GSK decreased circGFRA1, as a good response to drugs. Furthermore, some circRNAs might be associated with specific mutated pathways, such as the PI3K/AKT in MCF-7 cells with circ/linHIPK3 correlating to cancer progression and drug-resistance, or NHEJ DNA repair pathway in TP mutated MDA-MB cells. Keywords: circular RNA, breast cancer, drugs Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a set of RNA molecules, as defined by the structure of the single strand filament, which are generated by aberrant splicing and usually characterized by different composition in exons/introns in comparison with their cognate linear mRNA (linRNAs). CircRNAs, either non-coding or coding RNA molecules, can act as oncogenes or tumor-suppressors, and might be useful in early diagnosis or as novel targets for therapeutic approaches [1,2]. The interest in circRNAs is supported by the evidence of a r
