On Halloween morning in 2013, Alejandro Rose-Garcia sat in Esme Patterson‘s Colorado home, where the two musicians spent a few hours writing their first song together.

Rose-Garcia, the Austin-based singer-songwriter who performs as Shakey Graves, and Patterson, known for her solo material and work with Denver indie-folk band Paper Bird, met each other on tour that previous year, but had never performed together.

Halloween night, Shakey Graves and Paper Bird played a show at the Boulder Theater, where Rose-Garcia and Patterson debuted the song, written only a few hours beforehand.

“We just wrote it and brought sheets of music on stage and were wearing ridiculous costumes, and people just went crazy,” Rose-Garcia said of the song’s debut at the Boulder Theater. “It was probably one of the craziest reactions to a song I’ve had ever.”

A little less than a year after its debut, that song, called “Dearly Departed,” appeared on Shakey Graves’ 2014 album “And the War Came.” It has been played more than 4 million times on Spotify, and in mid-October, Rose-Garcia and Patterson stood side by side on the “Conan” stage and played the song for hundreds of thousands of late-night viewers.

“Now I’m getting text messages from friends that they’re hearing that song at a bowling alley in Arizona,” Rose-Garcia said. “The song has caught on maybe even more than I wanted or she wants it. It’s timely for some reason. And I feel like both she and I are partially responsible for it, but the song wrote itself really fast. We did it within maybe three or four hours, and usually I’ll toil over a song for months.”

It emerged from an intense period of transition and pandemic-fueled reflection. “For the first time in my life, I felt like all of the masks of my identity were stripped,” recalls Stephanie. “It was so important to take the space to cultivate realness and my own self for the first time.”

Ambitions of Ambiguity showcases Stephanie’s art for composition, her poetic nature, her sturdy vocals, and performative range. It’s a body of work both clever and thought-provoking, with songs that stick in your head and others that carry you off. The album not only feels deeply personal but also accessible and engaging. “I want to offer food for thought, something that could be constructive or deconstructive,” she explains. “I think writing in limericks, simple ways of saying big ideas, can help the evolutionary process of a listener.”

In coming back to Austin, Stephanie fell in love with and married long-time friend Alejandro Rose-Garcia (a.k.a. Shakey Graves), and the couple are currently expecting. Stephanie is eager to integrate motherhood into her identity. “The goal is to let myself change and grow…and de-stigmatize any ideas or stories that are in my head about what it means to be a mother and a creative person,” she reveals, adding, “It doesn’t mean that your journey ends.”

Shakey Graves (born Alejandro Rose-Garcia; June 4, 1987) is an American musician and actor from Austin, Texas.

His music combines blues, folk, country, and rock and roll. Rose-Garcia received his stage name at Old Settler's Music Festival in 2007 after a stranger, apparently high on LSD, rambled "spooky wagons". Then he and his friends jokingly gave each other Native American guide names over a campfire. After an inspired night of playing music, he decided to keep the name.

Rose-Garcia married fellow musician Stephanie "Buffalo Hunt" Hunt in April 2023, and the couple had their first child, a girl, in 2024.

Career

Before being known as Shakey Graves, Rose-Garcia had acting roles in Friday Night Lights and the Spy Kids franchise.

Shakey Graves became known for his one-man band set up and most of his 2011 self-released debut album Roll the Bones features him playing solo. This set up originated after he grew tired of having to borrow kick drums and high hats in order to perform. His solution consisted of a modified suitcase that functions as both a kick drum and a tambourine stand built by a close friend.

His unique style of performance led to him being asked to be the official “busker” for the Edward Sharpe and Mumford & SonsRailroad Revival Tour in 2011, where he played music for patrons entering each venue. His follow-up EP The Donor Blues was released in 2012, and features a collection of recordings from 2009.
