Career

Mynie Grové is renown for songs like Ek Verlang Nog Altyd (with Jan Grové) and children’s songs like Pinocchio and Tien klein Paddatjies.

An example of a famous song she composed is Floating Like an Eagle (for Bles Bridges).

She was a judge on Afrikaanse Idols season 1 in 2006 alongside fellow judges Deon Maas and Taliep Petersen with Sean Else as the host.

Mynie Grové was actually raised in a musical family and it was very clear from playing the piano by ear at the age of just 3 that she is remarkably talented and that she is set to pursue music formally.

She started composing before she even learnt how to read and later on studied Graphic Design and Music after school but decided to give it up after being discovered by German Producer Claude Larson and the scene was set.

A young Mynie Grové then entered the music business by performing for German TV’s Rundfunk 1, playing a rosewood babygrand on Signal Hill in a red mini dress and singing her own composition.

Claude Larson decided to move to Cape Town and Mynie Grové became a founder member of the ‘Claude Larson Singers’. This developed into a duo called ‘Mynie & Jan’ and from there, her star was on the rise.

Claude’s influence grew the Music IQ he recognised within her, and taught her the rudiments of studio production, session work, music arrangement and music publishing.

Mynie was born Mynie Basson Smith on 8 November in Cape Town. After school she studied graphic design and worked for a while as a model, but then went back to university where she studied music and psychology. She then began work at a recording studio. Her friend Mandy Wilson (who later made a name for herself as Marloe Scott-Wilson) introduced her to Jan Grové. Jan was born on 6 April 1945 in Greytown and was schooled in Pietermaritzburg and Durban. He studied maths and physics at Stellenbosch University where he met a guy called Tony Osler and the two began singing together. Tony and Jan would audition to become members of the Claude Larsen Singers at a similar time that Mynie also auditioned. Mynie and Jan hit it off and soon started singing together, eventually getting married in 1972. Their debut album was ‘Ek Verlang Nog Altyd’ which featured Falling Mirror’s Allan Faull on bass guitar. The title track would not only be the duo’s only SA chart hit, but, despite having a good solo career, would also be Mynie’s only showing on our charts. The couple would separate in 1978 or 1979 (depending on which source you use).

Kyra Loubser is a Cape Town-based hair and makeup artist, stylist and beauty editor for Kuier Magazine. Initially entering the industry as a hairdresser, Kyra was introduced to the world of television with M-Net working as part of the styling team for the Miss Soweto Pageant. She then went on to be a part of the styling team for the Miss South Africa Pageant, which she considers to be a career-defining moment. Kyra was then approached by Idols winner, Karin Kortje to do her styling, hair and makeup which jumpstarted her career as a stylist, hair and makeup artist and saw her work expanding into theatre. This led to introductions to names such as Alistair Izobell and Kim Engelbrecht. About a year later, she was offered the position as Tracey Lange’s stylist for Bravo! on Kyknet. Kyra also spends her time mentoring and upskilling four ‘Kyra Fairies’ who have shown an interest and passion for the industry. Her work has spanned TV, film and theatre but it’s her latest project, which sees her designing and creating the makeup looks featured in Kinky Boots at the Fugard Theatre, that has everyone buzzing.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in the arts?

I think I’ve always been artistic. It runs in my family. My whole family has got an artistic side to them whether it’s in cooking or baking. My artistic side is not specific to what I do. I do all types of art and I enjoy all types of art. I don’t know if it was instilled in me but my mom always kept me very involved in little school projects. She was a primary school teacher, so she was always very good with her hands. I was destined to become an architect but that didn’t work out. When you were artistic in that time, this wasn’t considered to be a career. I’m from Elsie’s River. The arts weren’t considered to be a sustainable career. You always had to have something to fall back on.

    Tape Grading

We grade our items according to Discogs grading system.  Please read before purchasing.

    Mint (M)

J-Card is crisp, clean and perfect in every way. Likely sealed. Cassette is brand new, and professionally produced. Used sparingly as a grade, should be free of even the slightest blemishes and/or defects. This grade should be used sparingly, if at all.

    Near Mint (NM or M-)

Sleeve should be totally crisp and clean with only the slightest evidence of handling. Tape is likely new, free of any wear or damage.

    Very Good Plus (VG+)

Sleeve has slight wear, marks, indentations, and/or may possibly have a cut-out hole (or similar). Tape has been taken very good care of and may have light marks or spindle wear. Should play cleanly with minimal noise or degradation.

    Very Good (VG)

Sleeve will contain more wear, marks, and/or indentations than a VG+. May have slight fading, a small tear/rip, or some writing. Shell may have heavier marks and wear than VG including plastic discoloration. Should play with some stronger hiss or degradation, but not enough to overpower music.

    Good (G), Good Plus (G+)

Sleeve will be well worn, marked, and contain obvious indentations, fading, and/or writing, more so than a VG grade – possibly a more significant tear/rip. Tape will have heavy wear on shell. Felt stopper may be missing. Tape may have minor creasing, but not broken. Must play through, may have heavier degradation that will overpower music.

    Poor (P), Fair (F)

Sleeve will be torn, heavily stained, showing general heavy damage, or will be partially missing. Likewise, tape will be heavily damaged, showing complete fading on the face, crinkled tape, missing screws or teeth, staining, and other heavy wear. Cassette will more than likely not play through.

Jewel Cases are not graded as they are replaceable.
