Richard Martin Lloyd Walters (born January 14, 1965), better known as Slick Rick, is an English-American rapper and record producer. He rose to prominence as part of Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew in the mid-1980s. Their songs "The Show" and "La Di Da Di" are considered early hip hop classics. "La Di Da Di" is one of the most sampled songs in history.

In 1986, Slick Rick became the third artist to sign with Def Jam Recordings. He has released four albums with the label: The Great Adventures of Slick Rick (1988), The Ruler's Back (1991), Behind Bars (1994) and The Art of Storytelling (1999). His music has been sampled and interpolated over 1,000 times, in songs by artists including Eminem, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Beastie Boys, TLC, Nas, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, MF DOOM, Czarface, Black Star, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, MC Ren, Montell Jordan, Tech N9ne, Lloyd, and Color Me Badd. In the process, Slick Rick has become one of the most-sampled hip-hop artists of all time. Many of these songs based on Slick Rick samples went on to become hit singles. He was one of the first hip-hop artists to be covered, when Snoop Dogg (then Snoop Doggy Dogg) rapped Rick's lyrics from his record "La Di Da Di" almost in

  • Where is slick rick now
  • To the legendary Brooklyn rapper Dana Dane, one of the most important albums in hip-hop history comes from British-born rapper Slick Rick and was titled The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.

In this episode of Best Albums, Soren Baker asks Dana Dane to take us back to the scene of New York after the success of “La-Di-Da-Di.”  Dana Dane says, “New York City was on fire. They changed the course that hip-hop was going by having the storytelling rhyme. At the time, everyone wanted to get into that storytelling rhyme.”

Soren and Dana start to talk about the first single off of The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, “Teenage Love.”

Soren explains how this song was sonically different from Slick Rick’s previous material.  Dana Dane relays how he was in the studio as Slick Rick was making “Teenage Love” and that the song took him by surprise because it was a slow song and it was so different.

Dana then explains how Slick Rick produced that song and most of the album. Dana says other than “Teacher, Teacher” and “Let’s Get Crazy,” which did not have Slick Rick’s imprint on them, Slick Rick produced the rest of the hits on the album.

Soren Baker expresses that on “Hey Young World” Slick Rick showed another side of his storytelling.

“When I think about ‘Hey Young World,’ that song spoke to how he wanted to see himself doing the right thing,” Dana Dane adds. “It was like a song to himself. ‘Listen, the world is crazy. You can fall off, but fall back on, man. It is going to be all right.'”

Dana explains how the first song on the album was “Treat Her like A Prostitute.” Dana relays that if you were new to Slick Rick and the first thing you heard was “Treat Her Like A Prostitute,” well I am sure it caught a lot of people by surprise.

Soren Baker switches gears and begins to talk about Slick Rick’s biggest song, “Children’s Story.”

Soren asks Dana if he knows why “Children’s Story&#

    Jeff “Chairman” Mao

Ladies and gentlemen, won’t you please join me in welcoming the one and only Slick Rick.

    [applause]

    Slick Rick

    Check, check.

    JEFF “CHAIRMAN” MAO

    How’re you doing today, sir?

    Slick Rick

I’m all right, Jeff. What’s up?

    JEFF “CHAIRMAN” MAO

It’s a great honor to have you here in the Bronx, where I do believe it’s said the people are fresh.

    Slick Rick

    Yeah. OK, all right.

    JEFF “CHAIRMAN” MAO

Tell me what the Bronx means to you. You were not born in the Bronx, however, this has been your home for some time.

    Slick Rick

The Bronx is like, the birthplace of hip hop, it’s a multicultural place. A lot of Latins, mixed with blacks, you know what I mean, and we just had fun. Breakdancing, doing our thing, growing up. Hip hop became a toy for us, instead of graffiti and all the rest of that stuff. So, we just worked it to where it is now. I mean, it’s a cultural thing.

    JEFF “CHAIRMAN” MAO

What’s your first memories of encountering hip hop as a kid living here, moving here from England?

    Slick Rick

I guess it was the big boomboxes, the older brothers that had the big boomboxes, and they would be playing breakbeat records, “Daisy Lady,” “Impeach The President,” and whatever was happening before mixing and like that. On the back of the trains, and stuff like that. And it was just very stimulating, it was like meat and potatoes. So pretty much it was like taking wack records and taking the meat and potatoes and then keeping it moving like that, and then rapping on top of it. There used to be a group called Daisy Ladies, I remember them, they used to be hot, ‘cause females, you know, the whole tomboy look was hot back then. Everything was flavor, you know? So, if you’re in a small community, where you have little options, you get to drawing on the walls, doing little things with your body to make yourself different from everybody else or whatever, your raps, whatever’s clever. So, it was a fu
