  • Spotlight ON: ETA Steve Michaels

    Carolyn MacArthur

    Introduction

by Carolyn MacArthur, Editor, SIDEBURNS Magazine

In 2015, I saw my very first ETA, Steve Michaels, perform at the Avalon Theatre in Niagara Falls, Ontario.  I was so blown away by Steve’s performance in Return to Grace that I went back to see him a second time the same week.  In 2017, I saw Steve once again in a return engagement at the Avalon Theatre, and twice again in 2019.   From September 13th, 2015, to the launch of SIDEBURNS Magazine on September 10th, 2017, I attended sixteen of Steve’s other shows.  Steve consistently delivered stellar performances at each show topping the list with a mega production of “Aloha from Hawaii” at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.  Captivating audiences in North America, Australia, Asia, and the United Kingdom with his tribute that spans three decades of Elvis’s career, Steve Michaels has gained a legion of loyal fans worldwide.

Today I have the pleasure of wishing Steve a very happy birthday from everyone at SIDEBURNS Magazine and thanking him for a splendid interview.  I wish also to thank Steve’s manager/agent Mark Erwin for his part in setting up the interview.  Mark has written a series of ETA related articles he calls “Confessions from my Desk” that will be posted on SB Mag in the weeks to come. Thank you also to Elaine Wren for many of the photos used in the interview.  I now present my interview with ETA extraordinaire, Steve Michaels.  Happy birthday, Steve!

    The Interview

    Q.  What has surprised you the most about being an ETA?

    A.  That I have been able to do what I love for the past 25 years, and Elvis fans from around the world enjoy what I do.  Keeps me inspired to continue to grow and break new ground!

    Q.  How do international fans differ from those in North America?

    A.  During my time in the UK touring with the musical Th

    Introduction

by Carolyn MacArthur, Editor, SIDEBURNS Magazine

Mark Erwin, “Manager/Agent/Promoter for Steve Michaels”, may ruffle some feathers by some of what he says in his four part series “Confessions from My Desk”.

Originally intended as an introduction to Spotlight ON: ETA Steve Michaels, “Confessions from My Desk” is a great companion read to Steve’s interview. In the series, Mark shares interesting stories of how he reacted when he first saw Steve perform, became his ultimate fan, and in due course, met Steve and became his friend and manager/agent/promoter.

Communication about Mark’s introduction and Steve’s interview began way back in January, 2018. My interview with Steve was posted in June, 2020. The lapse of time between initial contact and the interview* resulted in some of Mark’s ponders and comments becoming outdated; however, to keep the gist and flow of Mark’s writing, I have left his words unchanged and added editor’s notes where updates and explanations are needed. What you will be reading are Mark’s “confessions” as they were first received—long before CoVid 19 took hold of our lives and changed so many things.

As requested by Mark, photos of Steve are used in his articles rather than his own image; and because of Mark’s love of Elvis, and since he is the “Dealer Principal and Partner of an Automotive Dealership”, as well as “President of WIN Sports Management—Sports Promotions/ Manager/Agent/Matchmaker Professional Boxing”, I have added photos of Elvis and Elvis’s cars.

Thank you, Mark, for your well expressed views on the ETA world which at times are very amusing, at other times controversial, and often very touching.  One truth that comes shining through in each installment is your love of Elvis Presley and respect for Steve Michae

  • Steven Michaels

    Australian rugby league footballer

Not to be confused with Stephen Michael.

Steven Michael Michaels (born 13 January 1987) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 2000s and 2010s. He's played in the National Rugby League (NRL) and the Super League. His usual position was as a wing but he also played centre. Michaels previously played for Hull FC, the Brisbane Broncos, and the Gold Coast Titans.

    Background

Son of Ralph Michaels, a centre for Brisbane Norths in the 1970s, Steve Michaels played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 2004 while attending Palm Beach Currumbin Secondary High School.

    Professional playing career

    Brisbane Broncos

In 2006, he broke into first grade, but then fractured his ankle and had to spend over three months on the sideline. He returned to play in the Queensland Cup, then played in the State League decider. As 2006 NRL Premiers, the Brisbane Broncos travelled to Britain to face 2006 Super League champions, St. Helens in the 2007 World Club Challenge. Michaels played on the wing in the Broncos' 14–18 loss.

Michaels played in every minute of every game for the 2007 season, and his good form was rewarded when he was selected to play in the Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea at the end of the season. But Michaels pulled out of the game when he had, what was suspected to be pneumonia.

He was hoping to gain a slot in the centres for 2008 and did so, but in round 7 suffered a season-ending knee injury. He made his return in round one of the 2009 NRL season. He partners with Antonio Winterstein on the left flank.

In April 2009, he was named in the preliminary 25 man squad to represent Queensland in the opening State of Origin match for 2009.

    Gold Coast Titans

In May 2010, Michaels was released from the Brisbane Broncos so he could join local rivals, the Gold Coast Titans on a deal until 2012.&#

  • Elvis impersonator

Musician who performs in the style of Elvis Presley

An Elvis impersonator is an entertainer who impersonates or copies the look and sound of Americanmusician and rock singerElvis Presley. Professional Elvis impersonators, commonly known as Elvis tribute artists (ETAs), work all over the world as entertainers, and such tribute acts remain in great demand due to the iconic status of Elvis Presley. In addition, there were several radio stations that exclusively feature Elvis impersonator material. Some of these impersonators go to Graceland Memphis, Tennessee on the anniversary of Presley's death to pay tribute to the beloved artist.

While some impersonators perform a wide variety of Presley's discography, his songs from the 1950s and 1970s remain fan favorites.

    Origins

Contrary to popular belief, Elvis impersonators have existed since the mid-1950s, just after Elvis Presley himself began his career. The first known Elvis impersonator was a young man named Carl 'Cheesie' Nelson from Texarkana, Arkansas, who in 1954 built up a local following on WLAC radio with his renditions of "That's All Right, Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky." Nelson even performed alongside Presley when they first met, also in 1954. The friendship between Nelson and Presley is documented in the book "Elvis in Texas".

The second known impersonator was a 16-year-old boy named Jim Smith. In 1956, shortly after Elvis began to rise in popularity, Smith began jumping on stage and imitating Elvis. Smith's physical resemblance to Elvis and his mannerisms happened to catch the attention of Canadian DJ Norm Pringle of Victoria, British Columbia, who had been playing "That's All Right, Mama" and "Heartbreak Hotel" on the radio. Smith was featured several times on Pringle's regular TV show, though Smith only lip synced to the music, since he could not actually sing or play the guitar at that time.
